About

Why the name A Dash of Awkward?

Because everyone, at some point in their life, was at least a little bit awkward- and that’s okay! I’m not perfect, and I don't expect you to be.

A Dash of Awkward is a safe space.

This is an online space in which people can share their experiences and stories of food and culture without fear of being targeted. This site is for everyone, by everyone- no matter the gender, sexuality, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, and more. Your desired pronouns will be respected.

I recognize that as individuals with varying pasts, backgrounds, and relationships, we will at times have opposing perspectives. I understand that and encourage A Dash of Awkward to be a place of discourse and discussion. That being said, hate language and discrimination are unacceptable. Any form of it will be promptly addressed.

A Dash of Awkward is not sponsored and I don’t sell advertising space. I don’t make a profit off of stories and content shared with ADOA. I do this because I think it’s important. Not seeing your likeness in media can hurt, and I say this with experience. With ADOA, I want to help make sure that people never feel unseen and unheard.

I deeply believe that representation matters.

Everyone deserves to be seen, and their stories told. I hope to feature diverse narratives, perspectives, cultures, and more. Don’t see yourself or your likeness up here? Send me a message and let me know!

A Dash of Awkward is a place of love and understanding. I hope that you will see it as home, just as others, and myself, do.

About the Founder

Welcome!

My name is Lauren, and it is a pleasure to meet you.

I know what it’s like to grow up with a lack of representation, and how hard it is. As a result, it's really important to me that people see their likeness and their stories within the media.

It’s also important to me that cultural narratives are told not only by outsiders and visitors, but more importantly by those within the culture. Oftentimes cultures are framed and discussed under a white, Eurocentric lens. Simply put, I’m not here for that anymore. I created A Dash of Awkward as a space where everyone can share their experiences, good and bad, with food and culture. Here you are heard, appreciated, and valued.
